Background
This film was shot in five days just
before my grandmother´s 93rd birthday in August 2004. The
camera accompanies the preparations that are made in order to celebrate this
special day. The action shown displays the company and everyday life in my
family. I paid specific attention to the small things like a special gesture
and a facial expression, rather than spotlighting on the big
problems or any tensions between the family
members.
I had had
in mind realizing this film for quite some
time. But the smaller projects tend to be shifted to the near
future while it seems there is always something
"more important" to do – especially when one thinks that the
current surrounding family remains a reliable constant in one’s life. I’ve learned
that you have to be very careful, thinking that
there is plenty of time to bring your ideas to life. Sometimes it turns
out there is only one chance to do so. My grandmother Helene Hering died in 2005,
just a few days before her 94th Birthday.
This film is dedicated to her. Jan
